Running in the Woods

Author's Note: I wrote this piece to improve my conclusions and also to finish text analysis.

Text is what makes the entire story. It describes what people or things look like and make you see it in your head. Sometimes they use fictional writing or nonfiction. In the book “Woods Runner” it’s all historical fiction. The reason it’s fiction is because they put fake characters in the story to make it more lifelike.  The text can change to be what it wants but has to stay to the historical outlook. There has to be some stuff that actually went on but with fake characters and things like that. This book actually comes pretty close to what happened and that’s what I like about it.

One example of how it stays true to what actually happened is the Hessians. The Hessians are ruthless soldiers from Germany who were hired by the British. In the book they stormed into a house and killed the people then ate their food. After that they burned the house and barn. Hessians were exactly the same in real life. They took what they want and killed who they desired. Then they would burn all the rest. Right here they make the story very like what actually happened. I think the author did a great job of making like the Revolutionary War with the wars and fights and prisoners.

Another example is the Native Americans. They were very good with weapons and definitely with living with the wild. In “Woods Runner” the Native Americans were employed by the British too. Also they would attack groups of Patriots during the night and kill them off. Though they sometimes would not work with the British because they did not like them. It all depended on who the chief was for the Native Americans. Also in the book the Patriots were fighting them and had to retreat in the fight. The Patriots used that as a method of attack against the Native Americans in real life. They would sneak attack and kill some people then sneak away before anyone   would notice.  These kinds of things happened in real life, and it was important to bring some of those things into the book.

The last example is the prisoners. The British occupied New York and that was their main city. Within the city there were many prisons with not good conditions. The book told us that people were held in mills and barns. Also that there were men on old ships in the water. The prisoners could not escape and if they tried they would be killed. Some preferred to die bun gunfire over starvation or sickness. There were so many people on the boats that you could barley move. If one person next to you got sick you were almost bound to get sick too. Almost no food was given to each man a day. The portions were so small the whole meal would fit in your hand. The lack of water was also so great too and the British didn’t want to waste any on the Patriots. Using the bathroom was another terrible problem. Men would have to go in a corner or out a window or some weird thing. That was definitely where you would not want to be.

The revolutionary war was a time where so many things were going on. As you can see, like I said, this book stays very true to what really happened. Aside from the fake characters the book is very historical, and I think that the author stays true to what happened but in a more action packed way.
